Fiji's Lautoka have seized the initiative in Group A of the 2011 O-League after posting their second win on the trot, a 1-0 triumph over competition newcomers Amicale.

The group's other match saw Hekari United get their campaign back on track in style with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Koloale, while today's sole Group B fixture ended in a 1-0 win for Magenta over Tefana.

Like Lautoka, Vanuatu side Amicale had also recorded a victory in their opening match – upsetting defending champions Hekari 2-1 in Papua New Guinea – so something had to give this afternoon at Govind Park in Ba.

Striker Valerio Nawatu was the hero as his 19th-minute strike proved to be enough to guide the home side to another three points. Australian Mathew Mayaro, who was on target himself in Lautoka's opening round 2-1 win over Koloale, took on the role of supplier this time as his through ball put Nawatu in the clear to score.

Lautoka enjoyed the upper hand for the rest of the half but Amicale came back strongly in the second spell and gave goalkeeper James Nicholas plenty to do in the final quarter of the match.

For the most part though, Amicale's much-vaunted attacking trio of Alick Maemae, Jack Wetney and Stanley Waita were kept relatively quiet by a Lautoka defence well-marshalled by skipper Alvin Avinesh.

Amicale did have two golden opportunities to score but Shamil Rao was on hand to clear on both occasions.

The visitors' day got even worse after the final whistle when Richard Anisua argued with the referee in an unsporting manner and was belatedly issued a red card.

Lautoka boss Gurjit Singh was pleased to pick up another win and says the team's focus has now already turned to the next O-League match against Hekari.

"It was a good win for us because it now sees us top the pool," he said.

"The game was evenly played. We dominated the first half and they came back strong in the second. We have to work on many areas as we prepare for our next game."

Disappointed Amicale coach William Malas believes his players let themselves down.

"We came here for a win but it was not our day," he said.

"The lack of concentration and indiscipline cost us. We will now go back and prepare for the match against Koloale."

After losing 2-1 to Amicale in their opening O-League match, Hekari were desperate for a confidence boost ahead of their impending FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010 campaign.

They got just that when Solomon Islands star Henry Fa'arodo struck in the 32nd minute and local hero Kema Jack added a second just before half-time. Fa'arodo got his name on the scoresheet again in the 64th minute before Abraham Iniga rounded off the scoring 12 minutes later.

Fa'arodo could have turned his brace into a hat-trick in the last minute of regular time but Koloale goalkeeper Shadrock Ramoni managed to keep his spot kick out.

New Caledonian side Magenta earned French territorial bragging rights in the day's only Group B fixture, Jean Philippe Saiko's 65th-minute goal giving them a narrow victory over Tahitian counterparts Tefana.

The second round of 2011 O-League action wraps up on Sunday when the two New Zealand heavyweights, Waitakere United and Auckland City, clash at United's Fred Taylor Park home from 2pm local time.

Tafea 5 - 2 Vaum United in Bred Bank Cup final

Tafea F.C. Midfielder Daniel Natou, scored twice to allow manager
Robert Calvo a winner of Bred Cup 2010 final, last weekend in Port
Vila.

The midfielder displayed a perfect style of football the full 90
minutes with his team mates to put their home side 5-2 win over
Northern Champions.

Michel Kaltak scored for the champions in the 5 minutes and 3 minutes
later, Noel Morris added Tafea's second goal.

Vaum United Karl Roy scored for his side 11 minutes before break to
secure a goal against Tafea leading by 2 to 2-1.

In the second half of the match, Tafea continues to dominate the pitch
when Daniel Natou hit Vaum's net in the 71 minutes and Francois Sakama
came in as substitution to score the 4th goal in the 86 minutes.

Vaum retaliate in the last minutes and when Tafea couldn't handle the
pressure and former Amicale striker who now plays for Vaum United,
Kensi Saksak, recorded Vaum's second goal in 80 minutes, but Natou
came to top another Tafea's goals just before final whistle.

Tafea will celebrate with VT 200,000 price tag with the BRED Cup and
Vaum to enjoy the other VT100,000 back home.

"It's a fantastic game,'' said Richard Iwai, Tafea's Captain, to
Vanuafoot TV. ''We expect a tough game and it was a hard one. We got
lucky with by a couple of the goals and we're delighted to win the cup
for the 2nd time", he said.

"I want to thank Vaum United for a very good football display, and I
wish them safe trip back to Santo", he concluded.

New staff join OFC Technical Department

OFC is pleased to welcome new staff members Emmie Sope and Didier Chambaron, who have both joined the Technical Department.

The pair will work alongside Technical Director Patrick Jacquemet and Technical Coordinator Colin Tuaa as OFC programmes aimed at players, coaches, referees and medical personnel continue to increase.

Sope has joined as the new Women's Development Officer and will focus on the progress of the female game in the Pacific region. She will build on the impressive work done by Connie Selby, who was the OFC Head of Women's Football for two years from 2006.

Selby worked alongside her husband Jim, Jacquemet's predecessor as Technical Director, and made an outstanding contribution to women's sport in the Pacific before leaving OFC in 2008 to take up a position in the United Arab Emirates as national women's coach and head of women's football development.

Sope, 34, hails from Vanuatu and studied at tertiary level in New Zealand before moving here permanently in 2006 to further her nursing career. She is no stranger to OFC having worked for Oceania's FIFA Development Office – based at OFC headquarters in Auckland – in 2005 and 2006 as a part-time women's football consultant.

This role involved conducting assessments on women's football within the OFC member associations and providing recommendations to FIFA.

Her other experience in the world game includes being the women's football chairperson for the Port Vila Football Association in Vanuatu from 2002 to 2006.

Sope has been actively involved in the development of women's football since 1999, when she became the treasurer of the women's football committee in Port Vila.

She started playing the game at primary school and also lined up for the Massey University social team during her studying days.

"There is a need to develop women's football in the Pacific to reach a high standard in OFC competitions and I am glad to be given the opportunity by OFC to be involved in this process," Sope says.

"I'm looking forward to working with the women's football development officers within the member associations to improve women's football in the Pacific."

Chambaron has joined OFC as a Technical Coordinator and will be responsible for coach education and training programmes throughout the 11 member associations. The 39-year-old is from France and came to New Caledonia in 2004 to begin his club coaching career.

He returned to his homeland after a year but was back by 2006 to take up a role with Federation Caledonniene de Football.

He was involved in coaching national age-group teams before becoming the federation's Technical Director in June this year.

His playing career included turning out as a central defender at the third level of French club football.

Chambaron says the only way to improve the standard of football in the Pacific is to increase the knowledge of the region's coaches.

"For me, the players are the most important thing," he says. "But if we want to improve the players we have to improve the coaches. We want to create a coaching pathway to the top level, just the same as we are trying to do with the players."

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says the new pair will be valuable additions to the team.

"Both Emmie and Didier have extensive knowledge of football, as well as excellent skills so we are delighted to have them on board," he says.

"Emmie is joining at an exciting team for women's football with the OFC Women's Nations Cup having recently taken place and New Zealand set to compete in the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany next year.

"Didier also has a very important role as OFC looks to improve the standard and knowledge of our coaches in the Pacific region."

VFF Bred Cup final 2010: Tafea vs Vaum United

One of the biggest grand final of VFF Cup will take place tomorrow at Port Vila Stadium between former Vanuatu Champion Club Tafea F.C. and Northern Region Champion Vaum United F.C. for the Bred Cup final.

Vaum United has promised fans in Vanuatu that they will change the story of football in Vanuatu and that they are here in Port Vila to take back the Bred Cup to Santo.

Tafea F.C. will need to take precautions when handling Vaum who have registered a break-through in their group matches against Hilands of Tafea Province.

Vaums draw with Hilands 1-1 to make it through to the final on Wednesday.

Both team managers told Vanuafoot media that their players are ready to play full 90 minutes tomorrow.

VFF annouced that before the grand final at 3pm there will be a TVL Premier League match between Spirit 08 vs Ifira Black at 1pm.

the teams victory over OFC O-League Champion, Hekari United F.C. last
weekend in Papua New Guinea.

Jean Nako helps Tafea beat Yatel in TVL Premier League

Tafea F.C. through veteran striker, Jean Nako Naprapol, managed to
create a win, after putting a 4-0 victory show over Yatel in the TVL
Premier League last Saturday, at PVM Stadium.

The Power Red's started off the Premier League season with a loss to
Amical F.C, managed to put together their efforts to victory last
weekend.

Moise Poida promised his come-back after missing out in last season,
might have boosted the Power Red's to level their score at a high
peak.

When interviewed by Vanuafoot before the match, he revealed weaknesses
inside the Red's striking force, and focusing on the striking force
and relying on Jean Nako was profitable.

Nako scored 3 goals before young striker, Morris Noal took the
opportunity to settle the score at 4-0.

Northern Region Champion, Vaum United F.C., beat Southern Region
Champion Hilands FC of Tafea Football Association 1-0, at Port Vila
Stadium last Monday.

Damelip Dalong scored the winning goal for Vaum in the 25th minute to
secure 3 points on the table.

Hilands, who were led out to field by Captain Ken Iata Buru for the
first time in a Bred Cup tournament, failed to build on a good start,
but fell 3 points behind after their opponents.

Vaum United developed confidence as minutes passed and kept the score
at 1-0 to the final whistle.

They represents the Northern Islands champion, a region where the
level of football has dropped for so many years.

Their win earns them 3 points, but to get through to Bred Cup final,
they must overpower their opponents in their next match or a draw
should take them through.

Hard work (and good coaching pays off), says Chikau

Vanuatu top Goal Keeper, Chikau Mansale has come out publicly to congratulate Amical Football Club after their win in the OFC O-League 2010 match against PNG Champions, Hekari United, last weekend.

"Congratulations to Amical FC for an outstanding performance. I am very proud of you all and thank God for the victory", he wrote on Vanuafoot website.

"I know it's not easy to win away, but it's good to see the team-work and the spirit you all have, to beat Hekari. Hard work and good coaching pays off'", he said.

Chikau must be proud of Amical, especially of his cousin Fenedy Masauvakalo, who grew up as a cricket player and now he loves football and is a great player.

"This is just the beginning and you (Amical) should continue to work hard for your next match in Fiji against Lautoka next month", wrote Chikau.

Chikau has crown OFC goal keeper of the tournament in three OFC Beach Soccer competitions, and he is always regarded as the Vanuatu top goal keeper now living in Australia with his Italian wife.

Amicale, Lautoka find form on the road

Group A of the 2011 O-League has thrown up two surprise results on Saturday with 2-1 away wins for both Amicale and Lautoka against Hekari United and Koloale respectively.

In Honiara, Australian import Matthew Mayora put Lautoka ahead in the 16th minute to silence the 10,000 plus fans at Lawson Tama Stadium. Ten minutes later he grabbed a brace to leave the 2009 finalists reeling.

But Koloale clawed their way back with a goal to Ian Paia in the 35th minute, assisted by Jeffery Bule, while Benjamin Totori went close to equalising with a pair of chances just before the half.

The home side came out firing after the break with Paia almost sealing a double, but the visitors did well to sustain the early pressure. Totori proved a handful for the Lautoka defense in the second half but when he took a knock in the 85th minute, Koloale lost their momentum and looked to be out of answers.

The Fijians did well to hold the lead and will go home with a valuable three points to kick off their season.

In a similar match played out at PMRL stadium in Port Moresby, Amicale debuted in the O-League with an extraordinary 2-1 win over defending champions Hekari.

Vanuatu International Fenedy Masauvakalo opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with the visitors managing to hold onto the 1-0 lead at half-time.

Solomon signing Jack Wetney doubled Amicale's lead shortly after the break while compatriot Henry Fa'arodo got one back for Hekari in the 57th minute.

The home side, bound for the FIFA Club World Cup in less than two months, dominated much of the second half but the Amicale goalkeeper almost singlehandedly earned his side the victory with some outstanding saves in the dying stages of the match.

Meanwhile in Group B, Auckland City proved too good for AS Magenta at Kiwitea Street in Auckland with Adam McGeorge, David Mulligan and Daniel Koprivcic all getting on the score sheet to make it 3-0. In the other Group A match, Waitakere United and Tahiti's AS Tefana do battle at 2:00pm on Sunday at Fred Taylor Park.

Vanuatu Football Federation Bred Cup will kick off today at Port Vila
Stadium. Vaum United TVL Champion of Northern Region will play home
and away matches against the Champion of TVL Cup Southern Region,
Hilands FC at Port Vila Stadium. Hilands beat Port Vila Shepherds
United 2-1 to top the group last Saturday.

The match will kick off at 3:30pm and VFF ask all fans to come to
stadium before the kick- off time. VFF Bred Cup is proudly sponsored
by Bred Bank in Vanuatu and VFF would like to thank Bred Bank for
their continuous finally support to VFF t develop football in Vanuatu.

Vaum United Club secretary Tasso Morsen said his team is ready to
change the football story in Vanuatu.

"We went into camp four weeks ago and our objective is clear to play
well, to win the Bred Cup and bring it for the first time to Santo."
We want to change the story because every time it has always been
teams from Vila that won these national tournaments."

Fijian trio ruled out for O-League champs

Defending O-League champion, Hekari United of Papua New Guinea will not be able to field three Fijian players in their opening fixture against Amicale FC of Vanuatu this Saturday.

The three players; Alvin Singh and Malakai Tiwa of Ba and Osea Vakatalesau of Lautoka are yet to be cleared by their districts and Fiji Football Association.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar confimed the ineligibility of the trio.

"The three players have not been cleared and Fiji FA will only issue their ITC once their respective districts have cleared them," said Kumar.

"There is dispute between the players and their districts and they have to sort things out before the parent body clears the players to feature for their new club."

"Both Ba and Lautoka have stated that the players have breached their contracts and in this case all the dues to needs to be settled."

"We have informed Hekari about the situation and the club is in correspondence with Fiji FA and the districts."

However, Pita Bolaitoga and Tuimasi Manuca who starred for the PNG club in the O-League last season are cleared to feature this season and will be sure starters.

Hekari has already lost star midfielders in the form of Alick Maemae and Stanley Waita who have both joined Amicale FC of Vanuatu and will feature against their former side in Port Moresby.

Tafea prepares to meet Yatel tomorrow

Vanuatu Power Reds Tafea F.C., are aiming to secure 6 points when they
meet Yatel F.C. in the Port Vila TVL Premier League match at 1pm
tomorrow.

The match is considered a very important one for the Reds since they
have played 2 matches and lost 1 to Amical F.C. 2 weeks ago, by 3-0.

With the absence of Moisa Poida in the last session, saw a drop in
Tafea's power house, but the former captain now indicated to Vanuafoot
that he is returning to the pitch.

"I am back and will play for my club tomorrow. We respect Yatel a lot
because they can be winners and we have lost to them before, but we
are prepared", said Poida.

"We accept the fact that we are behind Amical and others in classment,
but we will not give up on the race", he said.

"Francois Sakama is a quality player, but playing along side Tafea's
new young striker, Noal Morris, it's difficult, so will rely on Jean
Nako tomorrow", he concluded.

Yatel F.C. is also focusing on the match and have indicated importance
of forwards strikers like Peter Lency.

They have lost one match with Spirit and a draw with Shepherds United.

VFF TVL Cup : Lakotau draw with Hilands 3-3

Lakotau F.C. of Shefa performed well in their last and final match of
the Southern Region VFF TVL Cup yesterday with a draw with Tafea
Football Association Champion, Hilands.

Heavy rain poured as the match begins, but it did not tampered
Lakotau's striker, Wilfred Alban's shot to goal in the 19 minutes.

Hilands Jimmy Iakel returned a goal 28 minutes later, but before half
time, Shefa Champions pulled one back when Jefferey Kalran scored in
the 39 minutes putting the half time score at 2-1.

Hilands Jemson Ruben equalizes for the Blues 69 minutes in the 2nd
half, but Lakotau continues to press on the Southern Island team when
Kalmet Lawa inserted the third goal for the Greens.

Hilands continues to attack in the last 15 minutes and were paid off
when Samson Tarif hit the back of Lakotau net to make it 3-3.

Both teams traded prime opportunities to score the game-winner in
added time, but no one found the back of the net before the final
whistle.

Lakotau Captain Jacques Kalotuk said, "The weather is not good today
but we played better than Saturday. We should have won this match but
that's football. After all, I think a 3-3 draw was fair for both
teams".

Hilands Captain, Ken Puru Iata also blamed the poor weather conditions.

"We are happy with the draw, but again the weather is not too good to
play for us", said Ken Puru. "My boys really work hard to return back
the equalizer", he said.

"We will now focus on our last and a very important match against
Shepherds United this Saturday. We are here to represent our province
and play to win", he added.

Hilands will play Shepherds United of Port Vila on Saturday at 3:00pm
and the winner will play Northern Region champion Vaum United on
Monday.

If Hilands must beat United to move to the top of the classment, and
United just need a draw to enter to final with Vaum United next week.

The O-League is turning eyeballs around for many thousand football
fans in Vanuatu and around Oceania region. Tomorrow, the lucky ones
will have the chance to watch the match live at PMRL stadium in
Moresby, and cheer for their teams, but the remain anxious fans are
waiting back home to catch all the excitement on the Radio Vanuatu on
Saturday.

TVL Premier League: Tupiji Imere wins at last against Spirit 08

Toroi Sokomanu's side got their first win of the campaign.

Tupuji Imere F.C. picked up their first win of the TVL Premier League
last weekend after beating Spirit 08 2-1.

The first goal came from a young Imere's striker, Silas Frank.

Silas managed a good ball work to the right side of the Spirit defense
and makes a fine shot of his life that drives a hit on the crossbar
and went in to the Blue's net.

Spirit managed to equalize from a great touch by Didier but they could
not stop the pressure when minutes later, Tupuji veteran captain, Anto
Malapa converted a penalty to give them the victory.

Tupuji Head coach Toroi Sokomanu said, "I am very happy with my young
team. They played well today. We lost three of our matches in the
championship and it will be very hard for us to catch up if we lose
this match, but today I am very happy with the 3 points secured by my
boys."

"Silas Frank's goal made me jump because it's a beautiful goal to
watch. He worked hard with the ball and made a good shot in the end".

"I wish to thank my supporters who are always here in every game to
give their support to us", said a happy Sokomanu.

"We are also proud because we are producing good players who have and
will continue to play here and with different clubs around Port Vila,
and people in our village of Mele are very proud of that too", he
concluded.

Tupuji Imere F.C. is well known in Vanuatu for producing good players
like Seimata Chilia and David Chilia who were played against with
Spirit 08 F.C., Alfred Malas in Tafea F.C., Derek Malas and Fenedy
Masauvakalo with Amical F.C. and Seule Soromon in New Zealand.

Stay motivated and play smart Amical, said Buzzetti and Poida

Carlos Buzzetti and Moise Poida have made calls to Amicale F.C. to
stay motivated and play smart when they meet their challenger this
weekend.

The Spirit 08 and former National and Fiji Technical Director, Carlos
Buzzetti, and Veteran national player Moise Poida, have expressed
their wishes to Amical Football Club as they prepare to meet with
Hekari F.C. this Saturday, in Papua New Guinea.

"Good luck to you as Champions, but stay motivated and play smart,"
said Mr. Buzzeti.

"Hekari will be very strong in their home ground and they will
continue to fight their journey, but always think positive and play
well", he said.

"Spirit 08 is behind you and I am sure you will play a fantastic match
against the OFC Club Champion in PNG", he concluded.

Carlos praised Amical for wining the championship last season and wish
them all their best in their match this weekend.

On another call, former Tafea F.C. and National Team captain, who also
played the historical match with the Oceania side against France 98
National Team, Moise Poida, also expressed his view on Amical's
success.

"Amical is a very strong team and they have been playing very good
football and deserve to play in the O League", he said.

"In 2001, my team went into the final with Wollongong Wolves of
Australia in PNG and we lost by 1-0 to the Wolves in the last minutes
of the game".

"We prepared well before the game by establishing a camp in Australia
and we stay there for a week before flying to PNG, and we believe that
has produced good results when we reach the final of the O-League for
the first time", said Poida.

"Amical, have a different strategy in contrast to Tafea. No overseas
trip, but I can assure everyone that they are very strong with a very
good team composition. I do wish them all the best this weekend in
PNG", he concluded.

Amical F.C. flew out from Port Vila on yesterday afternoon to Brisbane
and then to Papua New Guinea on Thursday morning.

The match between Amical and Hekari will be broadcast live on Radio
Vanuatu on Saturday.

Daniel impressive as Shepherds United cruised past Lakotau

Shepherds United cruised past Lakotau F.C. in a 7-2 victory at Port Vila Stadium yesterday afternoon in the first day of the Southern Region VFF TVL Cup 2010.

Former Vanuatu national Rep, Willie August open the scoreboard for the United 5 minutes in the first half and Daniel Michael also known as Danny, added on the second goal 9 minutes later and finishes of a 3rd just before break.

The 2nd half saw the Green boys from Lakotau through Moses Kalosin came to break the spell to give his team the chance of a goal of the day.

Danny hit the back of Lakotau net again in 55 minutes before 2 more goals came from united striker, Roderick.

Lakotau striker, Esau Timothy, added another score for the Greens before the end of the match, but were held to a 7-2 victory by the United.

Shepherds defender, Ali Silas said, "We didn't play well today but we scored 7 goals which is good for us because now we have 3 points on the table and await Hilands F.C. when we meet this Saturday.

"I am sure that our match against Hilands on Saturday will decide which team will play the champion of Northern Region, Vaum United in the final", he said

Lakotau Captain Daniel Kalkau said, "Shepherds United is too strong for us.Although we manage to score against 2 goals and missed a few in the second half, I must say that Football in Port Vila is too strong".

Lakotau F.C. will play their last match against Hilands F.C. of Tafea Football Association on Wednesday 20^th October 2010 at Port Vila Stadium. Kick-off time is at 3:30pm.

Practice makes perfect, says Natonga

Mr. Saby Natonga, VFF Vice President calls on the 33 referees who attended the FIFA MA Referee course in Teouma last week that their certificate is for them to keep at home, but they must apply what they have achieved in the field.

"I assure you, there is nothing more than knowing the rules and it should be on your must-read list if you want to become a better referee", he said.

"The more often you read and understand the Laws of the game, and practice it day by day, the better you will be. Practice makes perfect", he said.

"Your certificate is for your house but the most important element now is how you apply the laws of the game during a soccer match."

"You must prepare yourself before taking matches. It is important to always keep fit and doing exercises, plus group trainings are very important for you", he added.

Mr. Natonga concluded his special remarks by encouraging all the referees to stay strong and take their challenging role with pride so to gain respect from fan's and also for the betterment of the sport.

"I tell you fans will go crazy because football is dear to their hearts. Football is number one sports in Vanuatu, but I encourage you referees to stay on track and be strong".

Mr. Natonga also thanked the referees for their hard work and their efforts for their work and continuous support to develop football in their Member Associations.

Amical tops PVFA: Maemae scored four goals

Amical F.C. moved to top of the Port Vila Premier League division with 9 points as four goals apiece, came from Solomon International Alick Maemae and Jack Whitney's add-on, saw the Red Devil's hammered Ifira Black Bird F.C. by 5 goal to 0 last Saturday at Port Vila Stadium.

Alick Maemae open the scoring board 25th minutes in the first half by a perfect free-kick pass from the forward maestro, Fenedy Masauvakalo and Maemae makes no mistake but put the ball into the net.

Maemae and Fenedy were also involved in the 2nd goal by another free-kick 9 minutes later, and Maemae hit his second goal to stretched Amical leading by 2 goals.

Second half saw Solomon Futsal star, Jack Whitney putting the third goal in the 54 minutes after receiving perfect pass from the Super Red's captain Fenedy, and building more pressure on Ifira Black Bird side saw Maemae again scored his third goal from a penalty spot in 63 minutes.

The Red Devils continue to play their advanced style of football until Maemae score his fourth goal in the 82nd minutes to give Vanuatu Champion club a victory.

William Malas, Amical Head Coach praised his boys for their performance which in return saw Amical players throwing gifts and posing to their fans after the match.

"Ifira Black Bird beat us last month and today my players play with their hearts to beat them and this is a very good result for the club", he said.

"Alick Maemae plays a very good football today along side with Fenedy and Whitney. He shows confidence and we are all happy for him because today he is also our player of the match and he broke the club record by the 4 goals he scored in a match."

In the other two matches, Tupuji Imere made a come-back when they manage to beat the most improving team in PVFA last season, the Spirit 08, by 2-1, and Shepherds United manage to take revenge on the Academy by holding on to a 2-1 victory over the young guns.

FIFA MA Referee Course in Vanuatu a success

Local football referees in Vanuatu have the chance to enhance and upgrade their referee knowledge skills for a week in Port Vila last week when they attended the FIFA refereeing course contacted by OFC RAP team. The week-long course began on Monday 11^th to 15^th October 2010 was attended by 31 football referees and 14 Instructors from all the affiliated football associations within the Vanuatu Football Federation.

The Vice President of VFF, Saby Natonga officially close the course last Friday and ask all referees in Vanuatu to work hard and prepare well before they officiate any matches in their MAs or VFF. He said, "If there are no referees, there is no good football but you referees have a very big responsibility to do and the responsibility is to love football and you must always prepare well be officiating a soccer match."

Mr Natonga acknowledged the course and said the demand for higher and better refereeing in leagues around the country is of concern. He thanked the participants for taking their time to attend the course and has called on them to keep up their commitment towards building football in the country in line with FIFA standards.

"I fully support the words of VFF President, Lambert Maltock that in the future you referees must not boycott any soccer matches because you are all part of VFF team to develop football in Vanuatu."

Massimo Raveino in his opening speech he said Vanuatu Referees must work hard again to achieve success in refereeing. He said before Vanuatu was regarded as one country who supplies good referees that officiated in different World Cups tournament but now the standards is going down.

Mr Nasse Carlo VFF RDO said he is happy with the course and have learned a lot from OFC FIFA RAP team and ask his referees to work as a team to achieve success again in refereeing.

Mr Saby Natonga thanked FIFA and OFC for organizing the course again in Vanuatu for the third time.

Southern Region VFF TVL Cup begins Monday

Vanuatu Football Federation TVL Cup of Southern Region will begin in Port Vila on Monday next week and there will be three clubs playing to see who will be the champion of South of the country.

VFF Competition Manager Robert Calvo said, "Football is getting ready to kick for VFF TVL Cup for players playing in the islands next week and it's going to be good experience for them playing in Port Vila."

" I must say that football is not very strong in the islands but stories in the field of play can change after the final whistle."

Shepherds United of Port Vila Football Association, Latokau FC of Shefa Football Association and Holands of Tafea Football Association will be playing for a place in the final against Vaum United of Santo.

Amical Vice President Andrew Leong: Our Aim Is To Play Our Own Style Of Football Against Hekari FC.

Amical boss, Andrew Leong, told All Vanuatu Medias in a Press Conference yesterday that his team is not afraid of taking on last season's O League Champions Hekari United, and aiming to do well against them next week in Papua New Guinea.

"We are taking on OFC Club Champions, Hekari, a very strong side, but we are the Vanuatu Super Reds," Leong reiterated to Vanuafoot. "We may have our problems, but we come here to play our own match", he said.

"We know who we are playing, but Hekari does not scare us".

"This is only the first match in the group stage in the O League Tournament. Even though Hekari stands out as the best team, the other three teams [My team Amical, Lautoka and Koloale] have everything to play for".

"We want to play better and qualify for the next phase. This is first our O League objective."

"Our aim is to improve if it is possible our kind of play to have more continuity, to do better and stay involved in all the O League competitions until the end,"Amical Vice President Leong said.

Amical Head Coach William Malas said, we have to be brave to succeed against the O league champion. We'll certainly try to score at least a goal away and a win is good for us."

Koloale names O-league team

Solomon Island O-League representative club, Koloale has finally released its squad for the O-2010/11 League competition.

Koloale's list comes out just 2 weeks before their first O-League match of the season, against Fiji champions Lautoka on Saturday 23rd of October, 2010.

A total of 26 players have made the final cut for Koloale's O-League campaign with the list featuring some of the top players in Solomon Islands.

Standing out in the Koloale line up are defenders George Suri and Samson Takayama who will be expected to strengthen their defensive lines, an area they were vigorously searching for players for during their recruitment exercise.

Takayama has performed excellently in the 2008 O-League where he contributed massively to KOSSA's run to the finals where they lost to then New Zealand champions, Waitakere United.

Suri brings with him experience from playing in New Zealand where he has featured for Auckland City and also the East Coast Bays.

Upfront, Benjamin Totori has been named to shoulder the bulk of the scoring responsibilities.

Most notably, he will not be partnering with Henry Fa'arodo who has committed to Hekari United for the 2010 FIFA World Club Championship.

Instead at his disposal Totori has the experienced Ezra Sale and youngster Ian Paia who will be partnering him.

The partnership between Paia and Totori has been proven to be effective against local clubs but how that will work out in the O-League is something everyone will have to wait and see.

Utility forward Joses Nawo will be there to provide support to the Koloale attack as well as to the midfield where he has been known to be lethal from.

The most interesting inclusion in the team is former national goalkeeper Felix Ray Jnr. who has shifted from the blue/white of Honiara champions Makuru to don the green and gold of Koloale for the O-League.

Ray is one of the top goalkeepers in the country and having him as a support goalkeeper for Shadrack Ramoni will be very valuable for Koloale.

Koloale last represented Solomon Islands in the 2008/09 O-League where they reached the finals against Auckland City.

Club vice-president, Timothy Aruafu, is saying that Koloale will try to rise above their mistakes in their last O-League outing this season.

"We will try and use every opportunity to win all our matches," Aruafu said adding that they are not threatened by their opponents recruiting overseas players for their line ups.

Koloale have remained true to their word and have not imported any foreign players into their squad unlike most of the opponents they will be coming up against in the O-League.

In an interview earlier this year, coach Peter Eke had said there is no need for Koloale to look for players overseas because Solomon Island has all the players any team needs.

Referees stop boycotting matches, says Lambert Maltock

Vanuatu Football Federation President, Lambert Maltock reminded all referees in Vanuatu, especially Port Vila, that his executive do not want to see referees boycotting Port Vila Football Association matches again in the future.

Mr. Maltock made some very strong remarks before he officially open the FIFA MA referee course in Port Vila on Monday 11th October 2010, at Teouma Football Academy.

"We must not practice such stance, and I as President, will not tolerate such hindrance to football in Vanuatu. We must work together for the betterment of football in Vanuatu and need to move forward. Our priority is to serve our country's football federation and people who support football in Vanuatu. If there are no players, clubs, association and competition, there are no referees", he said.

"The clubs and players spend their money on affiliation fees, team uniforms and more and they don't get paid for what they do, and referees have free uniform from VFF, OFC and FIFA and also receive allowance from MAs and still create issues. Please act responsibly and lets work together to develop football in Vanuatu", he said.

He also stressed that any referees boycotting matches in the future will be disciplined and suspended from his/her role as a referee in Vanuatu.

"Since I came to work with the Vanuatu Football Federation in 2007, the federation administration and finance were in a mess. It was not easy for the team, and we have been working hard for the last 3 years despite the crisis we face, but one of the objectives we focus on, is to keep football alive in the country and at the same time we try to maintain the credibility of football in the field of play and also the performance of refereeing", he said.

"In 2007, the federation has thirty six million debt deficit, and it was not easy for me and my executive to find solution to that, and today, as President, I am proud to say, the 36 Million Vatu debt has now removed from our accounts".

"My next mission now is to focus on football development and want to see referees performance improves in Vanuatu. I want to thank OFC RAP team for what they have done for Vanuatu Referees and Massimo, thank you and your team for the time you will be spending here to help Vanuatu referees", said Mr. Maltock.

Amical 3-1 Tafea: Fenedy and Moffet Super Reds past Tafea

Amical FC maintained their six-point lead at the top of the TVL
Premier League in Port Vila as Fenedy Masauvakalo scored two goals in
the first half and Solomon International Moffet in the second half
earned them a 3-1 win over Tafea Football Club. Jean Nako of Tafea
scored the only goal for the Power reds in 90 minutes of the match.

The Super Reds victory over Tafea is encouraged by signs of a renewed
team spirit as Amical is now preparing hard to play Hekari on the 23rd
October 2010 in Papua New Guinea .

Amical coach Philimon John said that he was very happy with how his
team performed last Saturday. He told Vanuafoot: "Something is being
created here. The team was not discouraged and always believed in the
victory, and this state of mind pleases me very much."

"Before this match I said the team lacked experience and a single
match cannot change that. We experienced a difficult first half
against a team which defended rigorously and took no risks and we were
unable to create clear chances but thank God for Fenedy for the two
goals.

"At half-time I asked the players to be patient and not to get too
excited. After the break, the match was very open and they, like us,
had opportunities to open the scoring. What made the difference was
the physical freshness of those who came on.''

Fenedy Masauvakalo said, "We created many chances, and in this kind of
game we needed to be calm. The patience paid off and I dedicated our
win to God because every time I play I must ask for God for his
protection and to help me play fair and respect my opponent in the
field of play."

Vanuatu Referees must work hard now, says Massimo

FIFA MA Referee Course officially opens yesterday in Port Vila at the
academy by the Vanuatu Football President Lambert Maltock yesterday
morning. The course is conducted by the three Referee Instructors of
FIFA working in Oceania Football Confederation.

Massimo Raveino who is the Referee Development Officer of FIFA in OFC
and also the man behind the referee's organization in OFC asked all
referees in Vanuatu to think seriously about refereeing.

He said, "Before Vanuatu referees officiated in the World Cup,
Confederation Cup, Under 17 World Cup, Under 20 World Cup and Olympics
Games but now the refereeing in Vanuatu is going down and other
Pacific Islands are coming up."

"Why, because you Referees are not serious." Some of you are here
because you like travelling to other countries but I want to remind
you all that our main purpose is to serve Vanuatu Football
Federation."

"We are here to serve Vanuatu Football Federation and the referees who
are coming behind us" We need to work as a team to assist VFF
President and his executive to develop Football in all members
associations in Vanuatu. "He concluded.

Massimo Raveino will be flying back to Auckland with VFF President
Lambert Maltock on Wednesday to attend the OFC executive meeting in
Tonga this weekend and Neil Poloso and Kader Touati will continue with
the course until Saturday.

Port Vila Stadium will come alive again this Saturday 9^th October 2010 after the referees have decided to come back to officiate matches at Port Vila Football Association.

The first match of the day will see the Young stars of Academy will play Tupuji Imere at 12:00pm .Tupuji already lost their two matches this season and will play for a win this weekend. Anto Malapa , Tupuji captain will try to encourage his boys to fight for a win against the young stars. Academy already has 3 points on the table and will depend on striker Jean Kaltak and Nemani Rogara up front to score for them.

Second match of the day will see Shepherds United will play the most improving team in the league Spirit 08 at 1:45pm. This is going to be a very exciting match to watch. Both teams already have 3 points on the table. Spirit lineup is steady and the Sounders are winning. Spirit head Coach Carlos Buzzettie will want to play for a win and on the other side of the field is Albert Manaroto head coach of Shepherds United who also looking for a win against the Blues.

The third match of the day will see the Champions Amical FC will play against the last 15 years Vanuatu Club champion, Tafea Football Club at 3:30pm. Both teams already have 3 points on the ladder and tomorrow's game will be a tough one. Amical will have Fenedy Masauvakalo who is the fine captain and striker at the moment playing alongside Solomon International Jack Whitney and Alick Maemae. A new futsal court will be open soon at the Vanuatu Football Federation Academy at Teouma to help upgrade the standard of futsal in Vanuatu. VFF announces that the new facility dedicated to Futsal will focus in youth futsal development and bringing an established and proven approach to futsal skills development in Vanuatu.

John Kupa the Academy caretaker said, "It is good that we have a futsal court at the Academy."Our players who like to play futsal will no longer have to play on the grass but now on the real futsal pitch."

Moise Poida national U 20 said, "FUTSAL is about developing players." "Simply, it is the way the world plays indoor soccer."

"We are excited to bring FUTSAL to our academy and hope next year, Academy will have one or two futsal teams in the league in Port Vila."

Good win for the Champions

Vanuatu Champion Club, Amicale F.C. have more than enough motivation
to beat Port Vila selection in a friendly organized yesterday at Port
Vila Municipal Stadium.

The match is one of the most entertaining friendly matches this year
with so many chances coming so often you couldn't afford to look away
for a second.

The first half was exciting with two goals from Fenedy Masauvakalo in
the 12th minutes and Alick Maemae scored his first goal for his new
club in 39th minutes, and many chances were wasted by both sides.

The game started off quickly with Amicale with most of the ball
possession and Port Vila Squad coming in to catch up in their
midfield.

Despite a comfortable score line by Vanuatu's representative club in
the O-League, some weaknesses were evident. They looked comfortable
with their ball handling but a bit choked when they lose the ball.

The Red devil's midfielder, Stanley Waita who played the whole match
yesterday was delighted to see his side beat a strong Port Vila squad
which made up of three Mont Dort F.C. players from New Caledonia.

"We deserved the win against Port Vila. We played an exceptional fast
game in the first half. I am very happy with the role I play as
midfielder for the club and wish we can improve more before we play
Hekari", said Waita

Amicale F.C. will play their first OFC Champions league match on the
23rd October 2010 at the PMRL Stadium, Port Moresby.

Jean Yves Chapo, President of Amicale F.C. praised his boys for the
win, especially Alick Maemae who got praised for fitting well with the
Reds composition.

"Maemae is a player who knows what he wants in the field and he knows
how to get it. He also knows that he is not supposed to break and he
takes a team a step further. Maemae is a low profile person with a
very calm attitude", said Mr. Chapo.

"He has recently put on spot by media regarding his transfer to
Amicale and issues with Hekari, and the reason PVM Stadium was packed
yesterday for the friendly," he concluded.

Carlos Buzzetti's boys , Spirit 08 beat Vanuatu Club Champion Amical FC in a friendly match last Saturday at Port Vila Stadium while Academy smashed Shepherds United with 4 goals to nothing and the Vanuatu Power Reds, Tafea F.C., came on later to beat Yatel 3-1.

The only goal from 08 came in the second half from a corner kick and Spirit striker made no mistake to get the first and only goal of the match to give victory to the fourth ranked club in Port Vila last season.

Carlos Buzzetti said, "This is a very good win for us as we are preparing very hard for this year's championship. My boys played really well against a good side and we are happy that we score the only goal to win the match."

"The1-0 defeat against our team is a disaster", said an Amicale fan.

"It is a very bad day and there is nothing we can say and hope Amical can get back on track to be ready in time to play Hekari on the 23^rd October 2010in Papua New Guinea." he concluded.

Amicale F.C. have already played two friendlies so far. They beat Tafea FC two weeks ago by 3-1, and last Saturday they lost to Spirit 08 by 1-0.

Tomorrow in Vanuatu is a public holiday, and Amical F.C. will play their 3rd friendly at 3pm with the Port Vila Selection at Port Vila Stadium.

Supporters must respect referees, Vanua

Referees in Port Vila are asking Port Vila Football Association to look seriously into referee matters after supporters exchange strong words with the match officials last week at Port Vila stadium.

Vanua Bani, President of the Port Vila Referee Committee said, "The supporters must have some respect from the referees. We are not paid full time to do the job. I don't think football fans in Vanuatu understand the Laws of the game. The duty of the referee is not that easy. The first thing to understand about a referee is that his / her greatest trait is invisibility. Ideally, the referee will make virtually no impact on the progress of the game. Nevertheless, the referee must be prepared to take control of the situation when necessary".

According to FIFA guides, the referee's job is to make sure he or she has the:

Knowledge of the Rules or Laws of the Game
Being in the proper position to see what fouls may be committed
Having the support of a strong training and mentoring organization, providing instruction prior to, and feedback after the game
Being personally dedicated to doing the best job possible and its not that easy". He added.

"Sometimes one referee officiate 2 to 3 matches a day because the club don't provide their referees, he said. We also want the league to look into our safety. The securities we have now are not neutral. We want new security company to look after us in our next matches and also we want an increase of our allowance", he added.

PVFA executive has met with the referees committee and decide to help them out and also decided that there will be no matches this weekend and re-schedules the matches to next week.

Tafea, Amical and Yatel pull off wins in Day 2

Tafea step up their opening match of the season and took on the Academy youngsters last weekend and came away with a 1-0 win thanks to a second half goal from new striker Noal Morris (11) in 83 minutes.

The game saw both teams struggling up front to create chances which left both teams goal less at half time.

After the break Tafea got more into the game through crucial defending by Captain Freddy Vava and veteran striker Richard Iwai up front creating havoc among the Academy players.

It was not long before Tafea found an opening upfront which saw striker Noal breaking away from the Academy defence to slot in and seal Tafea's win.

Wilson August, Academy assistant coach said, "Our boys were lucky to be 0-0 at half-time. In the first part of the game they could have killed us off. But I am convinced we would have won the game." The whole team was mentally unbelievable because we kept going and kept going, against an opponent that was class and both sides missed chances. We played against a great side but gave away one very cheap goal which is really beyond our understanding, "he concluded.

The win gives the Vanuatu Power Reds 3 points on the table.

Second match of the day saw the new revamped Yatel FC bouncing back from their opening day loss to Spirit 08 FC to produce a stunning 2-0 over a struggling Ifira Black Birds side.

The match was a one sided game as Yatel dominated both halfs.

Yatel striker Peter Lency got one in early in the second half and super sub Tom Loughman sealed the win through a low drive just outside the penalty box.

Last match of the day saw Fendey Masauvakalo, Moffat Deramoa and Jack Whitney seal a 3-1 win over Tupuji Imere.

First half saw Amical netting their 3 goals after dominating the first half.

After the break Tupuji shut down the entire Amical midfield to dominate the last half.

Tupuji's consolation goal came late in the second half after referee Bruce George called a handball in the penalty box and saw Ando Malampa making no mistake converting the penalty.

Vanuatu face tough start

Coach Richard Iwai is under no illusions about how hard it will be for his Vanuatu team to pick up any points in their OFC Women's Nations Cup opener on Wednesday.

The side will meet defending champions New Zealand on the oval ground at Auckland's North Harbour Stadium in a game that appears, on paper at least, to be a mismatch of the highest degree.

The Football Ferns are heavily favoured to retain their title and have a group of world-class performers in their ranks. In contrast, this tournament marks Vanuatu's first appearance in a women's senior event and they are very much the underdogs.

"It's going to be very tough," Iwai says. "I never expected to play New Zealand first and I didn't want to be in the same pool as them. They are on a much higher level to us so our aim is just to do our best."

Sweden-based midfielder Kirsty Yallop will not face Vanuatu - she has not returned in time but will arrive in Auckland before New Zealand's second match against Cook Islands on Friday.

But Vanuatu may still have to contend with the likes of Hayley Moorwood, who recently put pen to paper on a deal with English giants Chelsea, and Ali Riley, the OFC Women's Player of the Year and USA Women's Professional Soccer League Rookie of the Year.

"We know that New Zealand are very strong," Iwai says. "I have seen their U-20 team play and the senior side will be another step up from that."

Iwai must wish he could strap the boots on himself and get out there to help his charges. The 30-year-old is a highly accomplished player and starred in Vanuatu's FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

He is also a previous nominee for the OFC Player of the Year title and has been playing his club football in Australia for the past three seasons.

He has tried to pass on some of his class and knowledge to the squad but has not had time on his side.

"I have only been with the team for a few weeks so it has been hard to make a lot of progress. I would've prefered to have six months or so but that's just the way it is."

To make things even tougher for Iwai, most of his players do not have backgrounds in the 11-a-side game.

"They have been playing futsal for their whole lives so it's hard for them to come out onto a big pitch and play football," he says.

Although he realises his squad will probably come away from the New Zealand game empty-handed, Iwai will not be happy returning home without a win. Vanuatu will meet Cook Islands and Tahiti in their other Group A matches and Iwai has his sights set on a pair of wins.

"We will try to win the other two games at least, that's our aim," he says.

"But the main thing is to do as well as we can so we can attract more women to play football when we go back home."

Spirit 08 cruised through their opening 2010/2011 Championship game
with a win over Yatel Football Club last weekend but the team
officials are not happy with the player's performance.

The damage was done in the opening half with first goal scored from
Edu David before Yatel equalize and second half goal from young Robert
Tasso (9)gave the Spirit 3 points on the table.

Edward Nalyal 08 team manager said, "Our boys had probably their worst
game in a long time. Some of our boys played very poorly as some had
not trained properly the week before. "

Edward says he is in confident mood as his team prepare for a
potentially tough match against Tafea next week.

"This week we are focusing on good training to prepare for the game
with Tafea in 1 week time (we have a bye this weekend). All said, we
are happy with the 3 points as a good start for us in the 2010/11
season."

"It's true Tafea were a problem for us last year - they beat us many
times. They might be another problem for us this time, but if our boys
train hard and play well maybe we can beat them."

"We always enjoy playing against Tafea as they are experienced team
and we can measure our progress by how we compete against Tafea," he

New Comer of the Premier Division, Shepherds United beat Tupuji 2-1 in their first premier match after 5 years last Saturday. The man behind Shepherds victory is the head coach, Albert Manaroto who guides them to win the first division championship last season and last week he helps the team to beat one of strongest football clubs in Port Vila, Tupuji Imere.

Albert said, "The boys have performed well in the first division last season and now we are looking forward to play the premier clubs."

The boys played well when we beat Tupuji Imere last Saturday and its good news for our supporters who really support us from the beginning."

"There will be new challenge, but for this season my boys are ready 100 percent to play. People must have objectives in life and in football our objective to be in top 5," he added.

United boys will not be on the field this weekend and will play Yatel FC next week at Port Vila Stadium.

"We'll play against Yatel next week. A victory would help us remain calm. Alick Maemae to play for Amical FC

Solomon Islands football sensation Alick Maemae in white has confirmed to the Amical Management that he will be joining the club as of next week.

The Amical Management has confirmed that talks with Maemae have come through with Maemae's family giving their consent for Maemae to come play for Vanuatu's O-League rep Amical FC.

Maemae whom was instrumental in Hekari's O-League win will now be joining Hekari colleague Stanley Waita who now also plays for Amical himself since arriving last month.

Amical Management has confirmed that all the necessary paperworks (ITC) is completed and are now waiting for Alick Maemae who will be coming over on Tuesday 28 September next week.

Report has shown that Amical's Solomon Islands import players have quickly adapted to the simple way of life in Vanuatu which is very similar to theirs back home and have been able to move around freely among the population in Port Vila because of the pidgin language which Vanuatu and Solomon have in common.

Amical's Richard Anisua, Nelson Sale and Batram Suri have been role models for the younger players in the club and together with the other Solomon Islanders have been running a kids club during the weekends at Amical's football pitch, the Antoine Rossi field.

Maemae's coming to Amical will strengthen the clubs midfield and attacking force as the club braces itself for the upcoming O-League tournament.

Young Kaltak Inspire Academy Coach

Young Jean Kaltak (11) inspired VFF Academy to shrug off their sluggish start to the season as they beat new Premier comer Ifira Black Bird 2-0 at the Port Vila Stadium last Saturday.

Superb Kaltak struck Academy opener out of nothing in the first half and score the second goal in the second half to seal the victory for the young stars.

Academy Head coach Moise Poida was full of praise for Kaltak after the match and said he believed VFF recent decision to make the Erakor young boy to be part of the academy is not a mistake and had breathed new life into his game plan.

Poida added: ". He is only 17 years and he is an important player and he can improve as top Vanuatu football striker in the future if he thinks very seriously with his football career. "I'm very happy for him because at this moment he probably isn't at 100% of his form. Maybe his two goals can help him and it is fantastic he got both of them today."

"I had confidence in my boys and I told them before the match we could win. Ifira Black Bird are very strong and well organized team and knows how to win the ball and keep possession. That's why our victory is so precious and we are happy that we have 3 points in our first match", he told Vanuafoot.

Vanuatu coach, Moise Poida said that they would look forward to more challenging matches against the Premier Clubs in Port Vila. He also acknowledges that the matches against the young stars will assist them in their preparation for Oceania Football Confederation U 20 tournament in New Zealand next year 2011.

Shepherds United, Academy and Spirit 08 record wins in thy opening day of the Port Vila Football 2010/2011 Season over the weekend.

Shepherds whom are new comers in the premier division opened the day's matches with a deserved 2-1 win over Tupuji Imere FC.

Shepherds got one early into the game thanks to an Albert Api strike earlier in the first half.

Tupuji's equalizer came right after the spell break with Ando cracking in a superb 40 meter free kicking to send the Tupuji fans celebrating in the stands.

But it was Shepherds whom made the most of their chances against a now 10 man Tupuji side who had defender Tintin sent off late into the second half and saw Shepherds pulling one up to seal a much deserved 2-1 victory over Tupuji.

Second game of the day saw the young Academy FC side coming away with a 2-0 win over new comers Ifira Blackbirds FC.

It was a double strike in each half from promising striker Jean Kaltak that sealed the victory for Academy.

Academy dominated much of the game with their brilliant ball controls, passing and superior fitness form displayed against a struggling Ifira side that were not in form compared to their side that got a surprise 2-1 win over O-League reps Amical FC.

Last match of the day saw Spirit 08 FC scraping a 2-1 win over a now revamped Yatel FC side.

It was Spirit that got one in early into the game only to be leveled by a brilliant Yatel goal just before tha half time.

But in the end Spirit got back into the game late into the second half to seal a win.

Port Vila Football Association (PVFA) 2010/2011 Season gets underway this weekend at the Port Vila Municipal Stadium.

There were 8 clubs in the Premier league and the opening day this Saturday 18 September 2010 will feature 3 matches.

New comers Shepherds United FC will take on Tupuji Imere FC in what promises to be a colorful game as both clubs play a similar brand of football along with their colorful supporters in black and white and Tupuji's yellow and blue.

Shepherds United since it will be their first game in the premier division will look to stamp their mark as they have done going into the Independence Cup finals and recently the third and fourth place playoffs in the TVL Cup premier division off season.

Tupuji on the other hand is an unpredictable opponent that all premier clubs know off and they can pull off anything from a win to a draw, though they are not one of the top premier clubs they have been up there for a quite some time and have the experience. Their match kicks off at 12pm.

Second game of the day will see Academy FC take on new comers Ifira Black Birds FC.

The Academy side comprising of Vanuatu's national Under 17 and 20 reps have made a name for themselves from day 1 in the premier division and have already proven themselves as team not to be taken lightly as they have pocketed several draws with former champions Tafea FC and new champions Amical FC last season.

Ifira will come on strong riding on their surprise victory over O-League reps Amical FC in the TVL Cup and will try to go one better since their disappointing Independence and TVL Cup campaigns. This match will kick off at 1:45pm.

Final game of the day at 3:30pm will see Spirit 08 take on Yatel FC. The newly revamped Spirit 08 will look to improve on their performance this season as they now have the potential and experience at their side to go head to head with the best since moving up to the premier division in 2008.

While Yatel whom have slowly been building themselves up as a team, will look to make a good start after a disappointing last season.

There are no matches for the two champions, Tafea and Amical this week, but next week according to the program, Tafea will play Spirit 08 and Amical will take on the young stars from Teouma.

It’s a difficult Woman’s Group; says Vanuatu woman’s coach

With very few islands around Vanuatu operating leagues for teenage girls, the task of selecting a women's team is not an easy one for most national coaches. One Woman who seems to have found a successful blend, however, is Vanuatu Woman's Team Manager Martha Poida, who has been helping Woman's football competition in Port Vila for some years now.

"It's a tough task because few talented players are scattered all over the country and it's your job to go out there and find the best players," She tell Vanuafoot Media.

If results over the last couple of years are anything to go by, Martha has done a fine job of tracking down the country's best young footballers. "I have faith in this generation and am sure they will play very good matches against teams in our group during the OFC Woman's competition in New Zealand.

Vanuatu Woman's team has been drawn in a fiercely competitive group A alongside OFC title candidates New Zealand, Cooks islands and Tahiti. "We have a lot of respect for our opponent's especially New Zealand but everything will be decided out on the pitch," says Coach Richard Iwai who is the coach of Vanuatu national Woman's team.

"It's a difficult group," they (NZ) have a lot of skill and talent. They are very quick and athletic too and they're very creative out on the pitch, acknowledges Richard Iwai. At the end of the day it's 11 against 11 on the pitch and we have high hopes of doing well," Richard concluded.

Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) Referee Development Officer, Nase Carlo, confirmed that Referees from Port Vila Football Association were tested at Korman Stadium last week and nearly all of them passed their fitness test.

"The tests conclude that referees qualify, in terms of fitness, will be ready to officiate matches coming up this weekend when the championship kick offs at Port Vila Stadium."I am more than satisfied with their performance in the tests." Say Carlo.

The physical fitness test was conducted by the VFF Referee Development Officer in collaboration with other Referee Instructors.

"Referees must keep in mind that players and coaches put in lots of time to prepare for the game and they have the right to expect a competent referee."

It's important that Referees take his or her job seriously and to provide a fair game to everyone."

"Taking a little time each week to review the Laws of the Game or to discuss a call with your fellow referees are important ways to ensure that you all are on the top of the Laws of the Game." says Carlo.

"We try to maintain our high standards every season for all referees and I trust that we can continue to work together and further promote our referees at local , OFC and international level," say Harry Atisson member of the Vanuatu Referee Committee.

Amical FC clinches the TVL Cup

A last minute goal from Solomon Island's Jack Whitney sealed a hard fought victory for Amical FC over Tafea FC in the TVL Cup final on Saturday.

The two teams entered the Port Vila Stadium in front of a record number of crowds whom had arrived several hours earlier before the finals took place eager.

Amical FC took the reins early with a superb free kick from Amical captain, Fenedy Masauvakalo.

New Amical Solomon Islands import player Gibson Daudau was taken down just inside the 30 metres mark and Fenedy stepped up and calmly converted a fantastic free kick sending a swerving ball over the Tafea wall and into an empty Tafea net.

It was not long before Tafea got back into the game with a Samson Obed spot kick after a handball error in the penalty box.

The First half ended with both team at 1-1.

The second half saw a hard fought match with both teams trying to get back into the game.

Tafea had numerous chances to go one up but failed to capitalize with Francois Sakama coming close only to be denied by an Ernest Bong brilliant save and Tafea's Michael Kaltak failing to convert a Jean Nako pass just inside the 6 metres mark.

After what seemed to be a goal drought second half, it was Jack Whitney that shattered Tafea's hopes with a goal that sealed the TVL Cup for Amical FC in 89 minutes.

Amical Management before the game said that they will be using this match as a preparation for their O League campaign next month against Hekari and what a preparation it is, with new import Gibson Daudau proving his worth as a worthy player setting up the first goal.

Andrew Leong Amical Team manager and main sponsor said, "I am happy for my team performances today and thank Tafea FC for a very good match," he said.

"I think we played better, faster, we found space. In the first half we played too slow, it was easy for Tafea to defend. But it was an interesting game and I am very happy."

"I just know Gibson Daudau few days ago. He is in a good moment, he is fresh because he did not plays a lot of games with us and he played very well in this match and thank Whitney who scored the winning goal and thank you too to all my players and club supporters," he said.

Eventhough they went down to first division this season, but yet they proved themselves to the crowd that they are one of the experience premier team, after beating Siaraga in the semi final match last Thursday 9 september 2010 at port vila Municipal stadium. In the first 20 minutes of the game, Seveners sticker Junior Isacaa made a good pass through the Siraga defense and found another stricker Reece Lerr then he score the first goal for the united. After the goal, Siaraga made some count attack but, Seveners defense under the leadership of Spencer (capt)they did not allow Siaraga to equalise. The boys in green recovered slowly with the ball with the good ball handeling of the midfield towards the defense yard of Siaraga, they put pressure until one of the Siaraga's defender clear a loose ball but the ball went straight to Seveners sticker Reece, he did not miss the chance while firing the secong powerfull goal. Seveners controlled the game until the last 5 minutes before the end of the first half, midfielder Hamsen found the right winger Andrew, he cross a good high ball inside the Siaraga's goal mouth area, and found the goal scorer's head Reece, the ball went inside the net and put the third goal and made Seveners lead the first half with 3-0. In the second half, the boys in green change their formation, they played defensive game until the final wistle. Again Seveners players would like to dedicate this win to Digicel for the contribution they did to them last week. Finally , Seveners goal scorer Reece Lerr is leading the goal scoring this time with 10 goals in 4 matchs.Seveners united will face Siwi FC in the final for the TVL cup next week 16^th of september 2010.

The 3rd New Caledonia's Inter Provincial Games will be held from the 12th September to 15th September 2010 in Bourail, New Caledonia. This event is a real opportunity for U14 and U16 young people to share their experiences and take part in an Oceania multisport event.

Vanuatu will be represented by 47 participants and 8 officials representing the federations of Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Cricket, Football and Pétanque. The delegation will be lead by Aurélie Jacquier, VASANOC Management Consultant.

Amical manager, Andrew Leong wants his players must stay focus when they go into battle against Tafea FC this Saturday for the TVL Cup final, and he is looking for another top performance from Fenedy Masauvakalo and Jack Whitney in Saturday's final.

He made this statement to warn his players that Tafea will come back after they lost to them 4-2 in their pool game last week. "I trust Fenedy as the captain with my players but they must stay focus," said Andrew Leong.

Amical veteran striker Batram Suri has left the country to go back home to the Solomons after sustaining a knee injury, but all is not loss as Amical have already recruited another Solomon Islands striker Gibson Daudau from the Solomon Warriors.

"The final with the former champions Tafea FC has come at a right time for we will be using the game as a preparation for our O- League campaign and Tafea is a big test for us because they have the experience and we will use this opportunity to put to test all our players."Andrew added.

Amical FC has already released its possible lineup against Tafea in the TVL Cup final this weekend with Jack Whitney and Fenedy Masauvakalo up front, Stanley Waita, Dereck Malas , Gibson Daudau and Robert Yelou in the midfield and Nelson Sale, Richard Anisua, Paul and Selwin in the defense department and Ernest Bong as the first choice keeper.

On the other hand Tafea FC has not yet released their possible lineup but have revenge in their sight after going down 4-2 to Amical in the pool games and will not take the final lightly with their attacking style of football.

Tafea have their lethal weapon Francois Sakama to rely on up front.

Sakama has been in training with Amical for some weeks and there has been talks of a possible transfer but las weekend saw Sakama back with Tafea scoring a crucial goal in Tafea's 2-1 victory over Spirit 08.

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
Amical FC: Amical FC are likely to look to Dereck Malas on the right flank to contribute his usual spark. Further forward, Fenedy Masauvakkalo and Jack Whitney has fired few goals in the competition this term and will be eager to score more goals in the final. TheSolomon Islander is likely to be partnered by Stanley Waita, with solid control move of Robert Yolou patrolling central midfield.

Tafea Coach: Robert Calvo is expected to employ a 4-4-2-1 formation for the final, showcasing Francois Sakama as sole striker. The Tafea FC coach is nonetheless a past master at defying expectations and could opt for an attacking configuration boasting five forwards or two banks of four players.

Harry Atisson participates in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup

Vanuatu FIFA Referee Assessor Harry Atisson now is back in Trinidad and Tobago to assess the FIFA U17 women's World Cup referees that have just kicked off on Monday this week.

Atisson received a short notice from FIFA asking him to participate in the event as a Referee Assessor.

This is not the first time Atisson has been to the Caribbean. Atisson was there in 2001 as a referee himself in the FIFA U17 World Cup for boys just after the September 11 incident and was the first referee to officiate the opening match between Nigeria and USA where he called a 1 minute silence for the players to pay respects to the lives lost at the September 11 incident before the game kicked off.

Tobago football officials still remember Atisson and had a special welcome especially for him being the youngest FIFA Referee Committee Member.

"I am happy to go back to Tobago even though it was a short notice because it is the where I laid down my foundation in being someone in the world of football and I have always enjoyed the Dwight York Stadium and coming back to it brings back fond memories, but now I come not as a referee but a referee assessor."

National and Lautoka striker Osea Vakatalesau is currently in Papua New Guinea, trying to seal a deal with O League champions Hekari United.

Vakatalesau flew out of the country on Saturday and missed Lautoka's National League encounter against Suva at Churchill Park yesterday.

The 24 year old Wailotua native from Tailevu had his suspension temporarily uplifted by Lautoka Football Association last week and has to re-appear before the disciplinary committee next Saturday for the final verdict.

Vakatalesau and six other players faced suspension after failing to attend a team fitness test a week before the Battle Of the Giants tournament in Nadi.

LFA president Shalendra Prasad said the news of Vakatalesau's departure came as a surprise to him as he was only informed yesterday.

"I only came to know about his departure to PNG today (yesterday) when I visited the players in the changing room before the match against Suva," said Prasad.

"His (Osea's) elder brother Leone Vurukania told me about Osea and his intention to play for Hekari."

"At this point, I cannot say much because he is still yet to appear for the final hearing next Saturday."

"We will not stop him if he wants to leave but there are things like his contract and the suspension issues that needs to be cleared" Prasad continued.

Vakatalesau scored 15 goals for Fiji in the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers and finished off as the top goal scorer in the first stage of qualifiers.

The lethal finisher also had a short stint with New Zealand club YoungHeart Manawatu.

If he gets the nod to join Hekari then he will be the fourth Fijian player to be part of Jerry Allen's star studded outfit. Pita Bolaitoga, Tuimasi Manuca and Alvin Singh are already contracted by the club. Ba's star midfielder Malakai Tiwa is also eyed by the club for the Club World Cup.

Shepherds United Captain Lorry Thompson (Picture in White) is confident ahead of this weekend's TVL Cup third and fourth place playoffs against Spirit 08.

Lorry whom is a former Tafea FC player has transferred back to his former club Shepherds United before going to work in New Zealand which saw him putting on hold his football career for quite some time.

After coming back from New Zealand Lorry then captained Shepherds United in the first division last season up to the premier division this season.

In the premier division Lorry has maintained his side as a force to be reckoned with by guiding Shepherds to the July's Independence Cup and recently to the third and fourth playoffs for the TVL Cup.

Lorry will depend on in form striker Danny Michel to deliver goals after coming out as top scorer in the first division, and together with Coach Albert Manaroto they will look to stamp their mark in the premier division.

Spirit 08 on the other hand will look to improve on their narrow lose to Tafea FC and will have teenage striker Robert Tasso to hold the reins up front.

Knowing Spirit 08 coach, Carlos Buzzetti will look to improve their disappointing lose to maintain an unbeaten record against new comers Shepherds United whom they have never lost to .

The game was a replay of the Independence Cup which saw Shepherds playing in their first ever final in the premier division after a huge first division success, but it was Amical whom the eventual winners were coming out with a close 3-2 win.

Other semi final match saw Tafea claiming a 2-1 narrow victory over Spirit 08.

Spirit got into the score sheet ahead of Tafea with a superb Robert Tasso goal but failed to keep the momentum going and saw Tafea coming from behind thanks to Francois Sakama and Silas Namatak goals at the end of the second half to steal the victory from Spirit.

It was in the end experience versus youth with Tafea fielding an experienced side packed with national reps to come out and win the game for Tafea.

Port Vila stadium saw again a record number of crowds packing the stadium.

The Telecom Vanuatu (TVL) final will be classic with the new champions Amical FC taking on the former champions Tafea FC this Saturday at Port Vila Stadium.

Vanuatu Futsal squad needs new blood

Futsal fans in Vanuatu have been calling for a reform in the national futsal squad after a disappointing OFC Futsal Championship campaign.

The fans have appealed to see the recent squad members whom have been a regular in the past years to be removed and replaced with new bloods so that Vanuatu can go back and relive the glory days like back in 1992 when Vanuatu went down to Australia 1-0 in the final.

Futsal fans have been bombarding Vanuafoot Radio Talkback Show last with strong messages of a reform in the futsal squad citing that the current players lack the flare to score goals.

A concerned caller from Malekula Island said that the recent selection of the national squad was unfair because it had all the players from the Port Vila Futsal League and then ignored the other league players.

Most calls in called for a younger squad and has asked Vanuatu Football Federation to in the future select a fair and just squad that will produce good results.

Vanuatu came 4^th in this year's OFC Futsal Championship in Fiji and is the worst ever result for Vanuatu.

The only young blood in the recent squad was Nemani Roqara from Erakor Village which one caller insists that VFF should make him an example to other young players and recruit more young players like Nemani.

OFC refs set for World Cup

Fijian referee Finau Vulivuli and her two assistants have earned the right to officiate at the U-17 Women's World Cup, kicking off in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday.

The Savusavu-based school teacher passed a fitness test in Trinidad on Friday and will now head an OFC trio, which also includes assistant referees Jacqui Stephenson from New Zealand and Tonga's Lata Tuifutuna, in representing Oceania at the event.

Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Referees Director Chandra Segran is delighted by the news of the trio passing their tests.

He says Vulivuli is now a step closer to achieving her ultimate goal - to officiate at next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.

"Fiji FA is proud of the achievements of Finau Vulivuli," Segran says.

"At a young age she has progressed well. We were confident all along that she would pass this fitness test and officiate at the U-17 Women's World Cup.

"This is yet another stepping stone towards her dream of making it to Germany. I would like to wish her all the best and hope that she continues to progress.

"The U-17 Women's World Cup starts next week and we will be keeping a close eye on her. But we are confident she will excel at this event," Segran says.

Fiji FA Chief Executive Officer Bob Kumar echoes those sentiments.

"Our referees continue to put Fiji's name on top," he says. "Just recently, we had Ravinesh Kumar at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and now Finau has passed the fitness test to officiate at this U-17 event.

"We are proud of her achievements and this goes to show that our development programmes are right on track."

The referee trio are not Oceania's only representatives at the event.

New Zealand's Young Football Ferns are also flying the flag for OFC and play their first game against Venezuela in Trinidad on Tuesday at 11am (NZT). Match coverage is live on New Zealand channel Sky Sport 1 from 10.45am.

TVL Cup semi finals expecting much fireworks

Port Vila Football Association TVL Cup semi finals will see Amical FC take on Shepherds United FC and Tafea FC play Spirit 08 FC.

Amical booked their spot with a 4-2 thrashing of Tafea FC in front of several hundred Tafea FC diehard fans in the Port Vila Municipal Stadium on Tuesday 2 September and therefore coming top in their group to take on runners up in group 2 Shepherds FC.

Shepherds on the other hand had to wait for a decider between Tupuji Imere and Yatel FC.

The Tupuji and Yatel game unfortunately for Yatel who needed a 3-0 win or more to advance to the semi finals, went down to a more superior Tupuji side 5-nil to pave way for Shepherds to step up and claim the runners up position.

This is the second time Amical will get to play Shepherds United this season.

Group 2 leaders Spirit 08 were the only club marching into the semi finals without a defeat in their hands and now have the daunting task of playing the former champions Tafea FC whom have slowly been developing a promising young side.

Tafea FC have recorded their only lose in the tournament to a now well oiled machine, Amical FC whom had earlier recorded a surprise defeat to new comers Ifira Black Birds FC.

Football world unites in fair play

Once more, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter is urging footballers around the world to show fair play and respect, as FIFA is holding its 14th annual FIFA Fair Play Days during the official matchdays from September 3 to 7.

FIFA recognises the fundamental role of fair play and respect in sport and the need to apply them to all sporting activities, including children's activities.

"Children need strong values to grow up with and football, being a team sport, makes them realise how essential discipline, respect, team spirit and fair play are for the game and for life," President Blatter says.

"FIFA's Fair Play campaign involves much more than simply promoting fair play on the pitch during a competition. FIFA is committed to encouraging fair play in society too, beginning with our future – with children."

The fair play principles of world football's governing body will be the focus of attention once again over the coming days in dozens of stadiums around the world in the race to score points in national and international games.

"I expect players, officials and fans to set a perfect example of fair play," Blatter emphasises.

He says it is even more important in vital matches such as these to uphold the values of fair play.

"These matches must epitomise fair play. They should encapsulate the sporting, moral and ethical principles for which FIFA has always stood and leave a lasting impression."

In Europe, UEFA will join FIFA in promoting the Fair Play Days in official games via its "Respect" campaign.

These are the 14th annual FIFA Fair Play Days to be celebrated since their introduction in 1997. They have come to feature prominently on the international match calendar in the past few years.

Many associations around the world have taken advantage of FIFA's annual support to promote fair play on and off the pitch and activities have been held in dozens of countries around the world, from grassroots to top-flight football and in many community-based projects.

Carlo is the new Referee Development Officer

Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) has a new Referee Development Officer (RDO) since 2008.

Nasse Carlo is the new RDO and he will be taking the reins in heading the referee department to work more closely with the VFF to upgrade refereeing standards for both male and female referees.

VFF President Lambert Maltock has come out to say that it has been a while since VFF has had a RDO but in life there's always a time for everything to happen.

Maltock welcomed Carlo into his new post and encouraged him to at all times uphold the good works of refereeing development in Vanuatu.

"I want to express my biggest gratitude towards the VFF in accepting my application and believing in me, for I try my best to carry the task ahead to ensure a healthy referee development in the country," Carlo said.

Carlo is himself a former VFF referee since 2000 and was known to have run referee courses bak on the island of Malekula and last year VFF has chosen him to attend the FIFA Referees Instructors course in New Zealand.

Harry Atisson whom is the VFF and FIFA Referee Committee Member thanked the VFF President for addressing the need to have a local RDO and acting upon it swiftly and congratulated Carlo and commends him as being the right person for the job.

Atisson went on to assure Carlo that the Committee fully back up and support his work as the new VFF RDO.

Amical FC thrashes Tafea FC 4-2

In the long-awaited match of the new season, the current PVFL champions Amical FC faced their predecessors of the championship title and long-time PVFL champions Tafea FC in the last Pool 1 match of the TVL Opening Cup 2010. Amical won with four goals to two but the score was not fully reflective of the match played. The match could have gone either way with Amical having to clear the ball off the goal line on several occasions.

The result sees Amical going through to the next tournament stage joining Tafea who have already booked their place after two wins. Amical were however on the back of a historic and disappointing loss to new-comers to the Premiere league Ifira Blackbird and were keen to make amends.

The showdown was perceived by many as the battle of the former and new giants of Vanuatu club football and despite the light showers of rain, a considerable amount of football fans turned out at the Port Vila Municipal stadium to watch. The slippery pitch provided for an interesting test of skill, strength and fitness.

Gifted attacking midfielder, Richard Garae was recalled to Amical's starting line-up partnering captain Fenedy Masauvakalo in strike whilst Tafea reinstated Geoffrey Gete in defense.

Both teams started with a cautious approach with careful passing and tight marking. Gete, Nanua and Freddy Vava stood resilient in defense keeping slippery Jack Whitney out of the box until Yelou crossed in a teasing ball. Tafea goalkeeper miss-timed his jump and his frantically outstretched fingertips pushed the ball away only to land at Witney's feet who laid off the ball to Garae whose straight shot hit the keeper's leg and ricocheted into the net to register the first goal of the game.

Tafea responded by applying pressure at the other end of the field with winger Noal drifting on more than one occasion into Amical's box but failing to find the back of the net. As Amical's Whitney and Derek Malas began to show dazzling footwork much to onlookers' delight, young Silas showed why he has been Robert Calvo's first choice Tafea midfielder as he began to run circles around the stars of Amical, eluding Stanley Waita and Whitney with ease. Tafea's pressure culminated with a play down the left wing delivering a pin-point cross into the Amical box finding Jean Naprapol who deftly headed the ball past the stunned keeper and into the corner of Amical's net. However, the goal was disallowed due to the linesman's ruling of offside.

The controversy of the offside rule was worsened when Tafea's defense appealed for offside at the other end of the field but linesman waved play on as Amical captain Masaufakalo blasted from close range unmarked to make two-nil.

Tafea continued to apply pressure as midfield talents Daniel and Silas gradually controlled the tempo supplying great through balls to lone striker Naprapol and swift winger Noal but could not break through the vise-like defense of Richard Anisua and Nelson Sale who were impressively calm in holding back the Tafea onslaught.

A momentary shift of ball possession saw Amical advancing into the Tafea territory and without a warning, defensive midfielder Waita stunned the stadium into applause with a long range strike to extend Amical's lead to three-nil.

Undeterred, Tafea continued to maintain ball possession and field position and were camped in Amical's territory for long spells. Tafea realised that Amical's defense was impenetrable in open play and opted for dead-ball plays. Free-kick specialist Daniel began to use his accurate ball deliveries from corner-kicks to trouble the Amical defense as corner-play after corner-play resulted in desperate defending from Amical with several goal-line clearances. Tafea repeated the attack tactic until one of Daniel's corner balls found Gete who turned defender into instinctive striker, trapping the ball on his chest and with only a bounce of the ball, blasted his unstoppable shot to put Tafea on the score sheet.

Tafea restarted the second half as determined and as dangerous as ever from corner-kick plays when another pinpoint delivery from Daniel found Noal's head just beyond the second post, scoring to close the goal margin to a one-goal difference.

Adrenalized, Tafea continued to push forward but could not find a good strike as Amical responded with dangerous counterattacks that saw both Masauvakalo and Garae almost finding the net. Tafea's defense was constantly tested by Waita and Malas as they provided great through balls and defense splitting passes. Witney proved to be the source of much joy as he frequently enchanted football fans with his fancy ball skills and fast runs however the last goal for Amical was deemed unfortunate by most onlookers especially Tafea fans. Veteran Tafea and Vanuatu defender Samson was clearing a ball when Witney quickly stretched out a leg and caught Samson's swinging foot, injuring Samson who collapsed in pain and remained motionless. Referee waved play on and the return ball found Whitney who found it easier to penetrate the Tafea defense minus defender Samson who was still on the ground close to the sidelines. Witney's low shot found the back of the net leaving Tafea protesting the referee's negligence of the foul.

Witney's move on Samson when seen properly by match officials is a red-card offense and can be appropriately compared to Ronaldinho's send-off in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in the match against England.

Tafea have been known for their sheer determination and repeatedly pressed forward but could not find another goal before the final whistle.

Despite the loss, Tafea showed a great display of football with fast runs and great balls from a side injected with new and young blood. Notable performances from the youngsters in the Tafea side were from Nanua and Silas. Nanua disturbed Witney from unleashing his full potential and showed very skillful interceptions on both high and ground balls.

Silas, on the other hand, proved himself as one the Premiere League's greatest and fastest dribblers of the ball.

Tafea FC's renovated side in this season with the introduction of Siwi FC transfers, Noal and brothers Nanua and Daniel, signals a wind-of-change. The two brothers were icons in youth football competitions and are not new to Tafea FC, where they developed their game and were reputable both at club and national level before moving to play for first division club Siwi FC in the past years.

Robert Calvo's new signings are young and have yet to show-case their full potential to create fluent team-work with their more experienced team-mates. The two along with midfield General, Daniel are seen as potential hero's for Tafea FC in the Premiere League, as the youngsters mature in the top league.

Amical, as well as other Premiere football clubs, also have new and young football talents and are aware of the stiff competition looming in the Championships of the new season.

With all the hype of excitement of upcoming football talents, Vanuatu football fans should be well-entertained in the coming PVFL fixtures and should not turn down any opportunity to watch a match.

All in all, the stronger the football competition in the league the better the football standard will grow in the country.

Vanuafoot now on FM 107

Football fans in the country today have international, regional and local football news brought to their doorsteps through local FM station, FM 107.

Managing Director and owner of the FM 107, Saby Natonga has the given the authorization for Vanuafoot to broadcast live on air the latest development of football.

Natonga whom is the current Vanuatu Football Federation Vice President stated that with the new agreement he now expects Vanuafoot to disseminate football information to all walks of life in the country.

Harry Atisson whom is the Vanuafoot media officer has welcomed the good news and thanks FM 107 Manager Arthur Knight, staff and owner Natonga for allowing Vanuafoot a session in their FM station.

Atisson has made the most out of the arrangement with the latest being a live coverage from OFC Futsal Championship in Fiji last month and has been airing live football updates daily every 11:45am.

Apart from FM 107, Vanuafoot has also a program on another FM station, Paradise FM which comes out daily at 9am and another session every Saturday from 10am and a Talkback show airing every Thursday evening for an hour from 7 to 8pm.

Ontop of it all, Vanuafoot has a TV program airing every Wednesday evening from 8 to 8:30pm, a website and has a full page allocated in the Vanuatu Infos weekly newspaper that comes out each Friday, and along with the new FM 107 deal, football news will be more accessible throughout the country.

Atisson has come out to stress that he has given everything he has so that football news can be circulated freely throughout the country to all and that he needs more freelance journos to comeout and help him carry out these tireless tasks and on top of that thanks Mathew Temar for taking his time off his busy schedule to come out and help update the Vanuafoot website and Sam Obed to edit the Vanuafoot TV Program.

Ifira out to relive former glory days

Over 2000 fans were privileged to watch young footballers of Ifira Blackbird FC staking their claim in the highest league of the country when they ended the unbeaten run of the reigning Port Vila Football Premiere League champions, Amical FC, at Port Vila's National stadium last Saturday.

The new-comers had accomplished what no other side had done for the past season by emphatically beating the O-League contenders in a match that saw Amical as lopsided favorites to win.

The youngsters from "Ifira Tenuku" convincingly won with two great goals either side of the halves in a no-fluke thrilling match, making a statement not only to their opponents of the day but all football teams and fans alike that they are no longer merely partakers of the top flight but genuine contenders hailing from a rich Ifiran heritage of national footballing greats.

In fact, the Ifiran side was inspired by Andrew Chichirua captain and anchor in defense and younger brother, the new talented goal poacher Waute Chichirua, whom is named after Waute, the father of legendary Erakor and Vanuatu footballers Pretin and Roger Waute. Like their father Aloan and Issau Chichirua who was once Vanuatu's mainstay midfielder, young Andrew and Waute are extremely talented.

The young Ifiran team pitted their talent against a great Amical line-up boasting the likes of Solomon national reps first-choice defender Nelson Sale and Solomon futsal hero Jack Witney amongst other top-class players.

Amical kicked off to a strong start with good flow and slick passing added with fancy footwork contributed by the Solomon flavor in the side. Unfazed the young Ifirans formed tight nit defense restricting the Amical strikers to long distance shots. Whilst Andrew commandeered the defense, unknown younger brother Waute struck fear into the heart of the Amical's defense. Waute almost scored, when with his first attempt outside the box, angled a low ball which grazed past the second post almost catching the keeper off-guard.

This play somewhat instilled a whiff of confidence as the Ifiran side stepped up the tempo and shifted two gears, matching Amical ball for ball and pass for pass and putting Amical's stars on the back foot momentarily. Amical continued to display their ball work prowess with midfield maestro Yelou leading the ball distribution which was however hampered as the attack led by in-form scoring machine and Amical captain Masaufaukalo was continuously restricted by Andrew calmly leading his iron clad defense.

With pressure piling on the Ifiran defense, Waute began to pester the Amical defense with good runs and ball control from counter-attacks. Football fans began to sense this was a different Ifira side in contrast to prior poor performances.

A counter-attack down the wing saw Ifiran no. 9 skillfully head a through ball into the path of the very fast Waute who side-stepped Amical's fullback Paul, cheekily slipping the ball through the legs of Nelson Sale and racing past another defender before cracking a low hard shot past the stunned goal keeper to a loud roar of every supporter in the stadium as they rallied the Ifiran youngsters.

The game picked up momentum as the Goliaths of the Premiere League attacked with waves of one-two passing in search of a setup for an equaliser but the Ifiran defense stood firm, bolstered by their young in-form keeper Kaltapu Sablan who thwarted many a shot from the likes of Masaufakalo and Witney.

Amical was gifted their prime goal opportunity when referee Alick adjudged Kaltapu to having breached the three-second rule for ball-in-hand and they were technically awarded a free-kick at the edge of the Ifira penalty box. Masaufakalo's first attempt went high over the cross bar but referee gave Amical another attempt for technical infringements in the Ifiran defense wall. The retake of the free-kick was curled in by Masaufakalo equalizing for Amical.

The Ifirans came under constant pressure by the Premiere League champions but held on with Andrew's back four shining with calm interceptions and ball retention as they kept the Amical forwards at bay.

Ifiran's then began to match their opponents' slick passing with some of their own football medicine and magic.

The second half play began just as the first half ended, with both teams building pressure and responding with promising counter-attacking. Amical's swift ball flow and goal attempts were matched in kind with Ifira's deft passing and counter-attacking.

Dominance in ball possession by Amical was matched by classy distributions and steadfast defense from the Ifiran side. Amical increased urgency as Derek Malas came on to avoid an impending embarrassment by the champions. Malas contributed to pile up pressure on the Ifirans as Amical showered an onslaught of attack.

As play was concentrated in the Ifirans' side of the field, Waute's quiet confidence and determination paid off as he chased a loose ball into the corner and powerfully dribbled past a fullback and defender before rolling the ball into the onrush of three Ifiran attackers who bombarded the Amical goal with a gifted goal for Ifira placing the under-dogs into the lead.

Towards the dying minutes, keeper Kaltapu made an amazing save from a close shot from Fenedy Masaufakalo and Jack Witney hit the crossbar as the Ifirans held on to deservingly claim the win.

Despite, not being able to progress through to the finals of the TVL Opening Cup, Ifira Blackbirds Football Club is the first club of Premier to beat Amical since it won the Championships last year and this year.

This is a tremendous achievement considering they are newcomers to the premier league and this should be a wonderful result not only for Ifira but other Premiere teams including Amical as they prepare for O-League so as not to be complacent.

Referee trainer earns degree

FIFA fitness instructor Kader Touati now has the paperwork to prove he knows what he is talking about. The Frenchman has completed a masters degree in fitness training, specialising in football, from the University of Lyon.

Touati, who works in the Oceania region as part of the FIFA-funded Refereeing Assistance Programme (RAP), is responsible for the fitness levels of the match officials within the OFC member associations and is part of an elite group to have earned the prestigious degree.

"It has been a goal of mine for a long time and not many other instructors have this degree," he says. "Lots of people apply for it every year. I am grateful to OFC for giving me this opportunity and am particularly thankful for the support of President Reynald Temarii."

The masters degree took one year to complete and Touati was financially assisted by OFC in his study.

He says going back to university was a strange feeling.

"It was very difficult for me to study again, 15 years after going to school. But fitness training is my job and it was easy for me to remember."

The 38-year-old was born in France and did all his schooling there before moving to Tahiti nine years ago.

Prior to joining FIFA and OFC, he did not have much of a background in football and most of his experience was gained in athletics.

"My job before this was in athletics and I have tried to put what I learned from that into football. You need to be able to adapt and use what you know in each sport. My attitude is that my job today is football, but maybe tomorrow it is rugby and the day after is tennis or athletics."

Touati is currently in American Samoa with Referee Development Officer Massimo Raveino and instructor Neil Poloso. They have just put the local officials through their paces with a FIFA-run referees course and will now move onto Samoa and the Cook Islands to conduct similar courses.

"We travel a lot to the different member associations," Touati says. "Our goal is to develop and grow the level of referees in the technical and fitness areas."

He and his colleagues are pleased with the progress made by Oceania referees in recent months. A pair of OFC trios attended the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and another trio was called into action at this month's inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

"The programme has been going for two years so it's still quite new," Touati says. "But it's good for the RAP team to have these trios because it can help the other countries and give them an example to work towards. Our mission is to help everybody.

"The most difficult thing for us now is to have the same number at the next World Cup in 2014 in Brazil. It's a good challenge for us, to maintain that or maybe increase it. If we have less then we have failed in our mission."

Team knuckles down in Auckland

The New Caledonia national squad is preparing for their upcoming Overseas Cup campaign with a week-long training camp in Auckland.

Coach Mark Bourdoulous and his men have holed themselves up at the Charles J. Dempsey Football Academy, a facility based at the OFC headquarters at Mt Smart Stadium.

The purpose of the trip is to hone their skills with daily training sessions and get some much-needed match experience under their belts. The side faced North Shore team East Coast Bays, who have just been crowned Northern Premier League champions, at North Harbour Stadium on Tuesday night and posted a pleasing 1-0 win.

They faced an even sterner test of their abilities when they met a trialist squad from national league club Waitakere United at the same venue on Thursday. Waitakere coach Neil Emblen fielded an experimental side that included a batch of promising youngsters, as well as the experienced heads of captain Jake Butler and former English professional Martin Bullock.

They ran out 2-0 winners but Bourdoulous was pleased to face such a strong side - seeing how his players fare against high quality opposition is exactly what he wants.

"The main objective of being here is to play some matches against teams we wouldn't normally play," he says. "The problem for me in selecting the team is that we have not had many games. And the players in the local championship play the same teams all the time so they need some different opposition."

The 35-year-old took on the job in May and is charged with preparing the squad for the Overseas Cup, which will take place in Paris from September 22 to October 3.

It is a biennial competition put in place for the national teams of French overseas territories and former territories to play against each other.

New Caledonia have been drawn in group one and will meet Guadeloupe, Martinique and Tahiti, while group two is made up of French Guiana, Mayotte, Reunion and Saint Pierre et Miquelon.

Bourdoulous has brought 20 players to Auckland and must cut this figure down to 18 by the end of the week. He had a choice between taking the side to New Zealand or Australia but chose the OFC headquarters because of the accomodation facilities it offers and the appropriate climate.

"The weather was important for me because in September in France it will be about the same as it is here now, rainy and cold. Our players have also never played on grass like this, the fields back home are very hard and dry. They never play with boots with proper studs, only moulded ones."

New Caledonia have not had any matches since June, when they played two friendlies against A-League side Gold Coast United in Noumea.

The Australian professionals took their opponents too lightly in the first match and paid for their lack of intensity with a 3-2 loss. The second game proved much harder for New Caledonia but they still pushed their more illustrious opponents all the way, settling for a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Bourdoulous was delighted with how his players handled the step up in quality.

"I was surprised because the local championship is not very good," he says. "But when they play in the O-League or against good teams, the players seem to have the ability to increase their level."

There are several things he is looking to work on, particularly concentration and defensive discipline.

"The biggest problem for our players is concentration. They are not able to play from the first minute to the end of the match," Bourdoulous says.

"Another negative point is the defence, they don't like to defend. They all want to get forward and score."

But the coach feels his players also have a lot of positive attributes and is aiming to make the most of these.

"They are very instinctive in the offensive side of the game. They are able to do things sometimes that are amazing.

"The players in France are not able to do that because they are too organised and coached. They are told you must do this and that and there is only one way to do it.

"I think it is good that our players are not like that and I don't want to change this. I would just like to integrate these qualities into a more organised system."

New Caledonia have no other games pencilled in before the Overseas Cup and Bourdoulous says they are looking no further ahead than their first match of the tournament.

"The first game is the most important because if you win it makes it more easy. It is very hard to come back if you lose," he says.

Academy makes controversial win

Vanuatu Academy Football team comprising mainly of Under 17 players from the local Academy have secured their first win in the Port Vila Football League Premier TVL Cup against new comers Ifira Black Birds last weekend.

A superb 35 meters Brian Kaltak free kick and Yvon Wilson goal sealed the victory for the young Academy side.

Ifira had a goal in but it wasn't enough for the Academy side to grab the controversial victory against Ifira.

Academy dominated throughout the game but Ifira defender Andrew Chichirua led a solid defense which at times proved an obstacle to the Academy side.

At half time saw a goalless game.

It was late into the second period when Academy's Brian Kaltak sent a screamer from a 35 meter free kick into the right hand side of the Ifira goal which sent the keeper the opposite direction.

Ifira then replied with a goal to get back into the game but couldn't hold their defense together when in the dying minutes of the game Yvon Wilson got one back for Shepherds to secure the first ever victory for Academy in the TVL Cup tourney.

During the second period 3 Ifira players were sent off with red cards.

Academy will take on former champions Tafea FC this weekend and will look to put on a similar game to last weekend's.

Sam from the NOC relations office, Zac, YP, Winnie and Darell (Volunteers) were presented with gifts from Vanuatu as a show of appreciation for the work, time and efforts in assisting the team through out their stay in Singapore. The oldest member of the team, the football assistant coach, Mr. W. August presented the gifts to the volunteers.

The team thanked Sam for his tireless time and effort in getting the paper works done for the team.

The volunteers done a really great work in organising trips, meetings, escorting the teams in their visits to the city and other places in Singapore and not to mention their supports for the team during competitions.

Skylite founder and managing director Richard Broadbridge, who oversees MAI TV and MAI Life magazine, officially signed on as an OFC Consultant on Thursday and will be tasked with developing a broadcast business plan in line with the 'OFC Vision 2011-2018'.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says OFC is delighted to have Broadbridge onboard.

"We've worked closely with MAI TV this year to provide free-to-air coverage of the FIFA World Cup to millions across the Pacific in 15 different territories. More recently, we distributed the OFC Futsal Championship via online streaming and through our regional broadcast partners," says Nicholas.

"It makes sense to formalise this relationship and work closely with Richard Broadbridge to develop a long-term strategy that will see fans enjoy even more football content on television and radio. This will include A-League matches and the All Whites games in October."

The recruiting of Broadbridge follows on from the successful coverage of this month's OFC Futsal Championship in Fiji which drew interest from football fans all across the world.

Fiji 2010 represented the first OFC event to be streamed live online via oceaniafootball.com, thanks to the support of MAI TV and Suva-based internet company Unwired Fiji.

Oceaniafootball.com had impressive figures throughout the tournament with 22,448 hits from 110 countries/territories while the online streaming itself attracted over 7,000 unique visitors from 54 different countries.

Broadbridge is pleased to see that so many people watched the action.

OFC Women’s Nations Cup teams learn fate

The eight teams fighting for a place at the FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011 have learned their fate after the official draw for next month's OFC Women's Nations Cup took place in Auckland today.

OFC Vice President Fred de Jong was on hand to conduct the draw at the OFC Headquarters along with Deputy General Secretary Greg Larsen, FIFA Development Officer Glenn Turner and Head of Competitions David Firisua.

The Oceania qualifiers will be held at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland from September 29 to October 8, coinciding with school holidays and preceding the All Whites' friendly match against Honduras at the same venue on October 9.

Hosts and defending champions New Zealand have been drawn in Group A and will meet Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Tahiti while Group B consists of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Tonga.

The teams in each group will play each other once before the semi-finals on Wednesday 6 October featuring the winner of Group A against the second-placed team from Group B and vice versa.

The 3rd/4th place playoff and Final will then take place on Friday with the champions progressing to the FIFA finals in Germany next June/July.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas is delighted that a record number of teams will be involved in this year's tournament and believes the future of the women's game in Oceania looks bright.

"Having eight teams take part is very impressive," Nicholas says.

"This means even more talented female players from around the Pacific will get to compete at the highest level in Oceania. It will give them the chance to test their skills against the best and provides a platform to progress in their careers."

This year's event will be the ninth edition of the tournament and hosts New Zealand will go in as overwhelming favourites.

The Football Ferns enjoyed a fairly straightforward path to the title during the last OFC Women's Nations Cup in 2007, scoring 21 goals in wins over hosts Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Samoa and conceding just one.

In an ominous sign for their opponents, New Zealand coach John Herdman is likely to be able to call on the services of overseas-based stars such as Hayley Moorwood, Kirsty Yallop and Rebecca Smith.

Fans should also be able to check out the form of Ali Riley, just months after the 22-year-old was named 2009 OFC Women's Player of the Year. Riley has 34 caps for New Zealand and signed for American team FC Gold Pride, who play in the country's Women's Professional Soccer League, in January.

The Football Ferns may face a tougher test of their abilities this time with other OFC countries teams putting more funding and resources into the women's game.

Amicale F.C. thrased Spirit 08 in their last match of the NSL tournament by 3 goals to 0 to claim its spot in the O-league. The win this afternoon has added point to a clear 19 on the NSL table ahead of all the NSL contenders.

Spirit 08 under coach Carlos and Veteran's Vari and Nari could not stop the Red Devil's 'Rocket', Fenedy Mausafakalo, in a battle with his opposing GK managed to chip the ball over to open the score in 16 minutes.

"It's great to get a win over a nation like Serbia who some are saying are dark horses for the World Cup.

"We'll take some confidence from it obviously, but we won't be getting carried away."

Overseas players cleared to feature

Fiji FA CEO Mr. Bob Kumar revealed that three more players have been granted their International Transfer Certificates.

Solomon Islanders Abraham Iniga (Marist FC) and George Lui (Makuru) are the latest players cleared for Rewa while Brazilian native and US based Bay Area Ambassadors player Pedro Osorio for Navua.

"I can confirm that Abraham Iniga and George Lui have been granted their ITC (International Transfer Certificate) and are free to play for Rewa. Pedro Osorio of Bay Area Ambassadors has also been cleared for Navua," Kumar said.

The 2010 Vodafone Fiji FACT starts tomorrow afternoon at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The trio joins the line up of other international talent with the likes of Navua- Stefan Clemens (US): Nadroga- A A Akande , O Saheed A (Nigeria): Lautoka- Danny Robinson (Waitakere), Salesh Kumar, Jurteet Singh Nijjar (NZ): Ba- Tuimasi Manuca (Hekari): Labasa – Roy Krishna (Waitakere), Pita Bolaitoga (Hekari United).

On the other hand Mr. Kumar confirmed that Vodafone Chief Operating Officer Mr. Pradeep Lal will officially open the 2010 Vodafone Fiji FACT.

Mr. Kumar says everything is on track and that they were ready for the first major tournament of the year.

Koloale pulled off a brave come back in the second half of their quarter final match against Marist to win it by 3 - 1 after trailing by one goal at half time.

The match will be remembered as the coming of age of many young players from both teams as they rose to take over the mantle from some of the former big names. The stars of the match were Koloale's Ian Paia, Francis Lafai, Steve Saru and Marist's Tutizama Tanito, Ben Hibiscus and Michael Oiramo.

Marist went ahead after just 1 minute after winning a penalty. Michael Misitana took the first shot but it was blocked by the Marist goalkeeper. Fortunately, Bentley Nalangu was there to make sure they got the worth of the penalty.

In front and in control Marist were looking like the much better side. Koloale were late to overcome their nerves but managed to mount promising attacks on Marist after they settled down.

Marist looked like they were going to extend their lead but fortunately for Koloale they were able to prevent further goals from their opponents. Shadrack Ramoni has never been busier in the tournament and this match certainly brought out the best in him.

As half time arrived the score line was at 1 - 0 in favour of Marist.

Koloale returned in the second half determined to wrestle the game away from their opponents and made the best restart they could have hoped for when Henry Fa'arodo followed up a shot from Paia to kick it into the back of the net after Navusu Kitu failed to fully catch the ball.

Three (3) minutes later Paia got himself on the scoreboard. His jump for Lency Saeni's cross was higher and better timed than the others that competed for the ball and his header was even better.

By now Koloale were back in control and maintained their 2 - 1 advantage while they searched for extra goal buffer. Marist suffered a set back in the 61st minute when left defender Sam Bino was red carded after being cautioned twice in the match.

Koloale, however, failed to make use of their 1 man advantage until the 81st minute when Benjamin Totori scored their third goal. His goal can be considered as one of the best in the championship after brilliant dribbling saw him beat 3 Marist defenders to score from inside the 18 yard box.

The full time score of 3 - 1 was enough to take Koloale through to the semi finals where they will meet the winner of the match between KOSSA and Northern United.
