Lautoka look ahead to next O-League

After finishing second in Group B of the 2010 O-League, Fiji representatives Lautoka are already looking ahead to next season.

Lautoka recently finished the group stage with four wins and two losses, falling one point short of Hekari United who became the first team from Papua New Guinea to qualify for the O-League Final.

Fiji Football Association Chief Executive Officer Bob Kumar says he backs Lautoka to go one step further next season.

“Lautoka played well in this edition of the O-League. They had some good results and a few upsets so hopefully they will be able to go a notch up next time,” Kumar said.

Kumar has confirmed that Lautoka will again represent Fiji in OFC's premier club competition, with the 2011 O-League set to commence in October 2010.

“Lautoka will once again be representing Fiji in the O-League competition since they claimed the 2009 National League title. The winner of the Fiji Sun Weet Bix National Football League this year will feature in the following 2011-2012 season,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile three Fijian players will feature in the 2010 O-League final with national reps Tuimasi Manuca, Pita Bolitoga representing Hekari and wonder boy Roy Krishna playing for Waitakare United.

The O-league home and away final will be played on Saturday 17 April and Sunday 2 May.

Hekari progress to O-League final

Papua New Guinea’s Hekari United FC are the first team through to the 2010 O-League final after they beat Marist FC 4-1 at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara on Saturday afternoon to claim top spot in Group B.

The other finalist will be determined tomorrow when Auckland City meet Waitakere United in the Group A decider at Kiwitea Street, with Waitakere needing only a draw to claim top spot while Auckland need the win.

It was the imports who starred for Hekari today with goals coming from Fijian Pita Bolatoga and Solomon Islanders Henry Fa'arodo and Alick Maemae, who claimed two. Qualification for the final comes as just reward for the Papua New Guinea club champions after they finished one point behind 2009 finalists Koloale in Group B last season.

Meanwhile, Marist could only manage a consolation goal in the 78th minute through Commins Menapi and finished bottom of the group with one point from six matches.

In today’s other Group B match, Lautoka picked up three points with a 3-1 win over Tafea in Port Vila but the Fijians had to settle for second spot, just one point behind Hekari.

The first leg of the final will be played on Saturday 17 April with the return leg scheduled for Sunday 2 May.

Undisciplined Blues punished at home

Hekari United [Photo by http://www.sun.com.fj/]
Hekari Souths United of Papua New Guinea has gone on top of Group B after its 1-0 victory over Lautoka at Churchill Park this afternoon.

Lautoka failed to live up to expectation in the much awaited match and indiscipline in the players saw the hosts finishing the match with only nine players.

After a goal-less first half, Solomon Islands international Henry Faarado struck the lone goal for the visitors in the 54rd minute of play.

Lautoka had its fair bit of chances to equalize but poor finishing and indiscipline proved to be the costly factors.

Lautoka now slips to the second spot with nine points while Tafea FC of Vanuatu which drew 0-0 against Marist in another Group B fixture today is in third spot with 8 points.

Hekari coach Tommy Mana who also coached the Navua side along with Gurjit Singh last season was elated with the win and commended his players for the fine effort.

"This win is a bonus for us and we are very happy to return from Fiji with three points."

"We have grabbed the lead on the points table and will look to maintain this fine form in the next match and qualify for the final."

"Lautoka was a good team but we had our strategies set right for this match and scored the goal which gave us the win."

"I am well versed with Fijian football and the 5-3-2 pattern that is commonly played here and this helped me with setting my game plan for the match."

Lautoka president Shalendra Prasad was gracious in defeat and said Hekari was the better team of the day.
"Lautoka played well but our players failed to capitalize on their chances and indiscipline was another factor that let us down."

"We still have one match remaining in the group and are hoping for the best in our final match against Tafea which will be an away match."

"We will miss two key players in the final match also so things will be pretty hard but we will prepare well and go for a win in the game" he added.

Lautoka travels to Port Villa to play Tafea FC on March 28 while Hekari plays Marist FC in Honiara.
The teams:

Hekari United FC: 2. Gideon Omokirio, 4. Cyril Muta,9 .Tuimasi Manuca, 11. Joachim Waroi (17.Kema Jack), 12. David Muta (C), 16. Pita Bolaitoga, 19. Koriak Upaiga, 20. Gure Gabina (GK), 25. Stanley Waita (18.Eric Komeng) , 26. Alick Maemae, 28. Henry Faarado.

Group B wide open after Hekari win

Henry Fa'arodo’s lone goal for Hekari United at Churchill Park on Sunday was enough to deny Lautoka a place in the 2009 O-League Final.

The Solomon Islands import scored a crucial goal in the 54th minute of play, taking Hekari to the top of Group B with ten points while Lautoka drop to second on nine points. Vanuatu's Tafea are still in contention on eight points after their 0-0 draw with Marist on Saturday.

Match Day 6 on Sunday 28 March will ultimately decide who advances to the home and away final to play the winner of Group A for a spot at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010.

Fa'arodo wasn't the only import to shine on Sunday; Fijian duo Pita Bolatoga and Tuimasi Manuca also played a huge role in Hekari’s win.

Coach Jerry Allen says they had prepared well before for the crucial match.

“We came here in search of nothing less and nothing more than a win. I thought the side gave a 110% in the match. We knew Lautoka were dominating teams here in Fiji so we came prepared. I have coached in Fiji before and am familiar with the style of play here,” Allen said.

“We must now go for a win against Marist. I came here with a game plan and it worked. Hekari was at the bottom of the table at one stage and we slowly made our way back in the competition and now we are at the top,” he added.

Shop N Save Lautoka president Shalendra Prasad says ill-discipline cost his side. Lethal striker Osea Vakatalesau and Marika Robanakadavu were both given their marching orders in the second spell.
“Our players lost their temper and as a result we had two players red carded which made things difficult for us. I haven’t lost faith and I know we can comeback and qualify but we will need the results to go in our favour,” Prasad said.
“The side did not play to the standard that we have been playing but I must congratulate Hekari for the win.”
Hekari need to beat Marist FC at Lawson Tama Stadium on to March to top the Group B while Lautoka and Tafea will both need a win - and the Marist-Hekari match to go their way - to have any hope of advancing.
